Hoeven Statement on Senate Override of the President's Veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act
Senate Votes 97 to 1 to Override
WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven today issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate overrode President Obama’s veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA):
“With today’s vote, the U.S. Senate stood with the families of the victims of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. This legislation will allow 9/11 victims’ families to sue foreign nations for any role they may have had in the death of their loved ones based on their involvement in terrorist activities in the United States.
“JASTA has the overwhelming bipartisan support of the U.S. Senate and House, both of which passed the measure without a single dissenting vote. We are sending a clear message to any foreign power abetting or harboring terrorists that they will be held responsible for terrorist acts on U.S. soil.”
