Hoeven Statement on Repeal of War Authorizations
WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee, today released the following statement after voting to repeal the 1991 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs):
“I voted to remove the 1991 and 2002 authorizations from the books because they dealt with our interventions in Iraq. The 2001 AUMF, the authorization Congress provided following the 9/11 attacks on our country, and Article II of the Constitution make it clear that the U.S. can respond to any terrorist attack, including actions to contain Iran across the Middle East. At the same time, I will continue to seek to provide our military with the tools it needs to keep Americans safe."
