Hoeven Statement on Appointment of Bob Wefald to American Battle Monuments Commission
WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven today issued the following statement after the president announced the appointment of Robert Wefald to the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). Wefald is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served 27 years and rose to the rank of Captain, and held the positions of North Dakota Attorney General and District Court Judge for South Central North Dakota. He also served as chairman of the committee that worked to secure the designation of USS North Dakota for a Virginia-class submarine.
“Bob has long been an advocate for our state and nation’s servicemembers and a dedicated public servant,” Hoeven said. “Throughout his career and personal life, his passion for serving his fellow veterans has been apparent. In this new role, he will continue his work to honor the men and women who gave everything for our country. We congratulate him on this well-earned position, and wish him the best in this important mission.”
The ABMC administers and maintains U.S. military cemeteries, memorials and monuments, both domestically and across 16 foreign countries. The sites commemorate the service, achievements and sacrifice of the U.S. Armed Forces. The agency also operates an online database of names associated for each site.
