Hoeven: Department of Education Issues Waiver Preserving Pell Grant Eligibility for UTTC
Senator Included Waiver Authority in Recent Legislation Signed into Law
WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has issued a waiver, authorized by legislation Hoeven secured, to preserve Pell Grant eligibility for students attending United Tribes Technical College (UTTC). Hoeven worked to pass legislation to preserve United Tribes students’ access to Pell Grants by providing the Department of Education with the authority to grant this waiver.
“This waiver helps ensure that United Tribes’ students have financial security as they pursue their education and future careers,” said Hoeven. “We worked hard to secure this waiver authority, and we appreciate the Education Department for working with us and following through on this timely issue.”
The provision was the result of Hoeven’s close work with UTTC on the issue, including a call he made to the Education Secretary and a letter to the Department of Education that he co-authored with Senator Heidi Heitkamp. Following this, Hoeven worked with colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee, several Senate committees and Representative Kevin Cramer to reach a legislative solution.
